The future taste of e-cigarettes will develop towards tobacco and low sweetness

More than two months have passed since the release of the draft for comments on the national standard of e-cigarette on November 30, 2021. The draft lists the "white list" of atomization additives, including 122 different compounds.

This means that in the future, brands can only develop flavors according to the ingredients and limited quantities in the "white list". So what does the "white list" focus on? How will it affect the development of existing products and future flavors?

Expand the "white list" and specify the dosage

Compared with the draft version list circulated in 2019, some compounds have been added to the new national standard version list, and the total number has increased from about 90 to 122.

The new version also specifies the maximum usage of most of the compounds, which is the biggest change and enhancement to the old version of the list.

At present, many overseas countries and regions are still using the "blacklist" (i.e. "list of substances that cannot be added") as the e-cigarette management standard, while China took the lead in using the "white list" to limit the use of atomization additives. This is not only a more strict and cautious management method, but also a more responsible management attitude towards consumers.

Ingredient category of "white list"

These 122 substances can be roughly divided into three categories according to their functions:

10 kinds of organic acids for acid-base regulation: large dosage space, without affecting the existing formula

13 alcohol compounds used as organic solvents: ample dosage space and many options

Flavor compounds, sweeteners and natural essence extracts used for flavoring and flavoring: sweetness and fruit flavour are more restrictive, and herbal ingredients are larger.

The main function of other substances in the list is seasoning. Most of them are extracts and essential oils of natural substances, and most of them come from herbs, such as cocoa, coffee, fennel, thin Heze, etc.

These ingredients have low sweetness, aroma and taste preferred by adults. At the same time, they come from natural crops and have complex components, so the maximum allowable dosage is also relatively higher.

Among other compounds used for seasoning and flavoring in the list, clear sweeteners (such as maltol and ethyl maltol) are strictly limited, with a maximum dosage of no more than 6%. The dosage limit of various lactones commonly used to modulate fruit aroma is more strict.

The restrictions on the use of these two kinds of flavoring compounds reflect the determination of the new national standard to further avoid the attraction and induction of products to minors.

Prospect of future taste R & D direction: tobacco, low sweetness

It is worth mentioning that tobacco extract is not included in the "white list", but is listed alongside nicotine and mentioned separately as atomizer raw material.

This is because tobacco extracts are derived from natural tobacco, may contain residual nicotine, and they are used for cigarettes and other products for a long time. The State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau has already specified its tobacco flavor standards. Therefore, it is no longer listed as an aerosol additive, which is consistent with the practice of electronic cigarettes being imported into tobacco products.

When the preparation of fruity / sweet tobacco oil is limited by the "white list", the rich fruity, sweet and leisure drinks in the market will be greatly reduced.

The development of tobacco oil flavor will comply with the general trend:

Develop different tobacco flavors to serve adult smokers;

Beverage tastes should also focus more on coffee, tea and other low sweetness mature drinks.
